baptism

Baptism is typically administered at Sacred Heart on the second and fourth Sundays of each month, beginning promptly at 1:00 p.m. Parents wishing to baptize children must have completed the baptismal preparation meeting for their first child, and have completed an interview by phone with one of the priests. Although no fee is charged for the preparation meeting, a donation to the parish on the occasion of the baptism is appropriate and appreciated.

Baptismal preparation consists of a one-time meeting for first time parents at the homes of host families. The meetings are scheduled for the first Wednesday of each month (excluding July) beginning at 7:30 p.m. Attendance is required prior to the baptismal ceremony. Please contact the rectory to discuss the registration of the baptism and setting of ceremony date. Information regarding the preparation meeting will be sent to you.

Godparent candidates for baptism must meet the criteria set forth by the Catholic Church to be eligible. Please address questions to the interviewing priest.

reconciliation

Children who have reached the “age of reason” (7) can receive preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation through either Sacred Heart Elementary School (412-441-1582) or the Parish School of Religious Education /CCD (412-661-0187 ext. 118). The sacrament is received initially at a ceremony during the season of Lent (date varies). Children are required to have two years of religious instruction in an approved program before the sacrament can be received.  If your child is registered in the elementary school, the instruction will occur as part of the second grade curriculum. Children who attend other private or public schools must register with the CCD program and attend classes regularly on Sunday mornings from 10:50 a.m-12:05 p.m.

first_communion

Children can receive the Eucharist for the first time at Mass during the Easter season (date varies). Children must have received first reconciliation and completed two years of religious instruction through either the school or CCD program.

confirmation

Confirmation is administered annually according to the schedule received from the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Children are eligible to receive the sacrament after an appropriate period of religious instruction and preparation through the school or CCD program and following reception of first Reconciliation and Eucharist.  The candidate's preparation will be evaluated and sacrament scheduled at the discretion of the pastor.  As with all of the sacraments, those who desire Confirmation should be practicing the Catholic faith.

Sponsor candidates for confirmation must meet the criteria set forth by the Catholic Church to be eligible. Please address questions to the parish priest.

marriage

Couples who desire the Sacrament of Marriage must contact one of the parish priests to discuss preparations, available dates and interview times. The Diocese of Pittsburgh requires that the future bride and groom notify a priest at least 6 months prior to the date on which they wish to be married.

Catholic couples who are non-members of the parish may inquire about weddings here, with the understanding that they are to provide their own priest-celebrant and a set-amount donation to the parish Endowment Fund.

Visit www.foryourmarriage.org for more information about preparation for and life after vows.

rcia

Adults who wish to become members of the Catholic Church prepare for their sacraments through the RCIA program. Interviews of interested candidates take place in August. Inquirers should contact one of the priests to discuss the process and schedule an interview. Classes of instruction, which begin in September, will continue through the date of the Easter Vigil (date varies) during which time adult initiation takes place. Instructions take place in conjunction with adults from St. Raphael, St. Bede and St. Charles Lwanga parishes at the activities center of St. Bede parish on N. Dallas Avenue.
